Following a more than 12-hour debate in which the government and opposition engaged in a heated exchange of opinions, the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 was approved by the Lok Sabha late on Wednesday with a majority. With 288 votes in support and 232 against, the law was approved by the Lower House.
The measure aims to reduce complexity, provide transparency, implement technology-driven management, and enhance the administration of Waqf properties.
Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, criticized the Congress during the discussion for allegedly disseminating false information about the Bill and reassured the audience that it does not aim to meddle in the religious affairs of Muslims. “That the Waqf bill is interference in Muslims’ religious matters and properties donated by them is fear-mongering for vote-bank,” he stated.
The Joint Parliamentary Committee’s proposed bill was presented to the Lower House for review and approval earlier in the day by Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju. According to him, the Joint legislative Committee’s (JPC) consultation procedure was the biggest one ever conducted by a legislative panel in India’s democratic history.
